Real Life Growth Mindset at Home and in The Classroom

Little girl doing a puzzle

Have you ever heard your child say, “I just can’t do it!” and felt your heart sink? You’re not alone. Every parent and teacher faces these moments — and they’re powerful opportunities to help kids grow.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a mindset expert to make a difference. With a few simple tweaks to your daily routines, you can help your child turn frustration into curiosity and confidence.

Real-Life Growth Mindset Moments

  • The Puzzle Challenge
Last week, one of my students struggled with a tricky puzzle. Her first reaction? “This is too hard!” Instead of rushing to help, I knelt beside her and said, “It’s okay to find things hard. Let’s figure out one piece together and see what happens.” After a few tries, her smile said it all: “I did it!”

  • The Art of Mistakes
In my preschool classroom, we celebrate mistakes. Kids share something that didn’t go as planned, and we talk about what we learned. The room fills with laughter, and little by little, children realize that mistakes aren’t scary — they’re steppingstones to new skills.

How You Can Help at Home

  1. Create a “Yet” Jar

    • When your child says, “I can’t,” encourage them to add “yet.” Write challenges on slips of paper (“I can’t tie my shoes yet”) and keep them in a jar. Each time they make progress, celebrate together!

  2. Storytime with a Twist

    • After reading a book, ask, “Did any character have to try more than once? How did they keep going?” This builds empathy and resilience.

  3. Model Your Own Growth

    • Share something you’re learning as a parent, too. Maybe you tried a new recipe or started a new hobby. Let your child see that everyone — even adults — is always growing.

    Why These Moments Matter

When children see that everyone faces challenges — and that effort and curiosity are what count — they start to believe in their own ability to grow. These small, everyday moments lay the groundwork for resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
